What is the difference between blinds and shades?
When we meet with our customers during their consultation, they generally know what kind of window treatments they want. Indeed, there's generally a great choice celebrating any room's aesthetic and design - accentuating the style while delivering excellent light control.
But there is always one point of confusion. People familiar within the window treatment industry know of the wide variety of window treatments, but most people don't go about their day debating the positive aspects of shutters vs. cellular shades.
To most, blinds and shades may as well be the same thing. So what is the difference between blinds and shades? And how can knowing the difference benefit my life?
The Confusion Between Blinds and Shades
Most people freely use blinds and shades colloquially to mean the same thing; this can be attributed to regionality or even just recency with what you heard last.
The tricky part is that there's nothing really to challenge people until they try to find their own window coverings - and most window treatment companies often neglect the need to educate before selling. So today, rather than immediately pitch you on the variety of shades and blinds we offer, we'll cover the major differences between blinds and shades.

Furthermore, if you have air conditioning or heating vents placed in your window frames - or if you want them there but don't want them showing - shades will cover them up nicely!
How do I choose between blinds and shades?
Ultimately, the big decision is your choice. Where blinds and shades highlight different aspects of the same design element, each is highly customizable and can be tailored to your home.
The first thing to consider is the purpose of your blinds or shades. Blinds tend to be sturdier and can offer a higher fidelity of light blockage than most shade options (blackout shades notwithstanding). Shades are typically used for privacy and their light-diffusing elements.
If you want to block out as much sunlight as possible, choose blinds with a wide slat spacing - the wider the space between slats, the more light they can block out. However, if you want to let in some natural light while maintaining privacy in your home or office, choose sheer shades or ones that feature things like cellular material.
